FameLab SA 2017 Winner & FameLab International Winner

What are you currently doing (studies/work)?

I am currently employed in the Small Scale Mining and Beneficiation division of Mintek, as a scientist (geologist). I just completed my MSc in Environmental Management at the University of the Free State. I am working with disadvantaged communities and using the ore occurrences in their vicinity to create jobs through mineral beneficiation.

What drove you to enter FameLab?

My supervisor and mentor, Dr Ndabenhle Sosibo encouraged me to enter the competition.

How did you find your FameLab experience? What still stands out today?

Everything about the Famelab competition was extremely memorable to me. From the workshop we had before the national semi-finals, to the butterflies in the tummy before my talk. But the most enjoyable thing for me was meeting the other contestants, both from South Africa and abroad. Everyone I met was an exceptional scientist, talented speaker and beautiful person.

How did your perceptions about science communication and public engagement with science change through participating in FameLab?

I used to think science communication was difficult and relating to non-scientists a challenge. Through Famelab I have learnt that nothing explains science quite as simply and accurately as everyday examples, such as doing laundry, catching the train to work or even food preferences. We are literally surrounded by science and scientific concepts, and all it takes to have effective communication is to put those everyday concepts into perspective.

Did FameLab impact you in any other way?

Greatly so.  It ignited in me a passion to engage with people on scientific platforms. I would always hide away in corners at conferences and thought I would not enjoy talking about science outside the lab, but now I know and do better.

What would you say to young scientists thinking about taking part in FameLab?

I would tell them to GO FOR IT. There’s absolutely nothing to lose and so much to gain. Famelab is truly an experience of a lifetime!!!.
