Step-by-step tips and guidance on how to get involved in National Science Month 2026
GET INVOLVED
There are two ways of getting involved in National Science Month 2026:
- Start the conversation, plan a science activity: Volunteer-organised activities are the backbone of the Science is for Everyone concept of NSM. Anyone can volunteer to initiate a science activity between 1 July 2026 and 31 July 2026. There are no rules about how you celebrate science – it is entirely up to you! If you do need some ideas, there is a list of themes to guide you about the types of topics that are important in South Africa today. Your NSM 2026 science activity can be a discussion with your community about challenges that you face collectively; it can be a project to clean up pollution in your area; or it can be inviting a researcher to your area to talk about their science and how it can help the community. As a volunteer, you are in control of your NSM event.
- Join the conversation, participate in a science activity: Keep an eye on this NSM 2026 webpage, your local media and social media. Make a note of the details of the events that are registered to be part of NSM 2026 and join in on the day.
You can find more information and inspiration by clicking on the link for the NSM 2026 Implementation Framework.
Please be sure to register your NSM activity via the link in the “Register an Event” section of the webpage so that your initiative can be counted among the NSM 2026 highlights.
And don’t forget to spread the word about NSM 2026 on social media using the hashtags #NationalScienceMonth2026 or #ScienceForEveryone or #MyScienceStory.
Guidelines for designing National Science Month 2026 activities
The following block themes are intended to guide the planning of National Science Month 2026 activities. Each time block focuses on a specific theme; however, organisations and individuals are not required to strictly adhere to the scheduled blocks or their sequence. Participation across the month is encouraged, but meaningful engagement at any point during the month remains the primary objective.
