About

Mahikeng Astronomical Observatory (MAO) is a business unit of the National Research Foundation (NRF) with the mandate to advance public awareness, appreciation and engagement of science and technology in South Africa.

Our observatory was established on 01 August 2015. It is a property of the Department of Physics of the North West University, Mahikeng campus. MAO houses a 16inch Meade LX200GPS Telescope that is mounted permanently behind the Soccer Institute. Currently the auxiliary instrument available is the MEADE DS II CCD camera capable of reasonable photometry observations.

Work is in progress to make the telescope operatable remotely. Once this is achieved, the telescope will be made available for school projects nationally. Request for such use will be handled via the South African Repository for Astronomy and Space Science Educational Materials (SARASSEM) or Mafikeng Science Centre.
