Meet Cheyeza Mulasi an overall pro-nuclear optimist
Cheyeza Mulasi, 23, is an overall pro-nuclear optimist, having completed both her undergraduate and honours in nuclear related fields and currently studying towards an MSc in Nuclear Engineering at North-West University. Cheyeza’s work experience includes an Internship at the South African Bureau of Standards under the Radiation Protection Services and the radiation metrology department.

Cheyeza is part of the Black Science, Technology and Engineering Professionals, an NPO organisation with the aim of advancing black excellence in Science, Engineering, Technology, and innovation. In 2016, she established the BSTEP Student Chapter at Tshwane University of Technology. Where they offered Saturday extra classes in Mathematics and Physical Science to grade 10 and 11 learners at Bona Lesedi secondary school in Mamelodi. This initiative was successful as the pass rate in those subjects improved. She also participated in the call for the inputs to the Department of science and Technology white paper.
In 2019 she established another student chapter at North-West University, which is actively working with a local school on Saturday extra classes. She has organised networking sessions with the main of creating a platform for students in the sciences to interact and network with professionals. Cheyeza was elected into the 2019/2020 Executive Board of BSTEP as the Secretary, making her the youngest and only female board member in BSTEP. She initiated the BSTEP GIRL-ERA, a project with the vision to promote women empowerment in STEMI professions.
This project addresses the unique challenges that affect women, specifically those that serve as barriers to discourage women from participating in the economy through science. In 2019 she became part of the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) role model and mentor. She currently mentors 3 female engineering first year students at NWU.
