South African Students Represent the Country at International Student Practice in Russia
17 October 2025
Three South African students proudly represented the country at the International Student Practice (ISP) hosted by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, Moscow Region, Russia, from 22 September to 10 October 2025. The group included Mr Happy Vilakazi from the NRF–SAASTA, Mr Xolile Mkhatshwa from the University of Venda, and Mr Edwin Matlou from the University of Limpopo.
The ISP is an international educational and research programme that brings together senior students from JINR Member States and partner countries. It provides participants with access to world-class research facilities, lectures by leading scientists, and opportunities to engage in supervised research projects in nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics, condensed matter physics, computational modelling, and information technology.
The students were accompanied by Dr Ndabeni and Prof Newman from iThemba LABS, who also facilitated the trip and provided institutional support throughout the programme. During the ISP, Mr Vilakazi undertook a theoretical project titled “New Algorithms Based on Deep Learning for Neutron Tomography.” Mr Mkhatshwa focused on High Energy Physics, while Mr Matlou explored Computational Materials Modelling, contributing to South Africa’s growing expertise in scientific research.
A highlight of the stay was the International Day celebration, where Mr Vilakazi presented “South Africa – The Rainbow Nation.” His presentation showcased South Africa’s vibrant culture, scientific achievements, and national diversity to peers from Russia, Serbia, and Vietnam.
At the end of the programme, each group leader presented their research findings to JINR scientists and fellow participants. The event culminated in a certificate award ceremony, where participants were honoured by the Director of JINR for their successful completion of the practice.
This international engagement, coordinated by iThemba LABS, reflects South Africa’s commitment to developing globally competitive scientists and strengthening international research collaborations through the NRF–SAASTA and iThemba LABS partnership
