NRF-SAASTA Engages Emerging Scientists at Mintek-SCI Symposium and Hackathon
16 October 2025
The Mintek-SCI (Science Convention of Innovation in Science, Technology and Engineering) Symposium and Hackathon, held from 1–2 October 2025, brought together some of South Africa’s brightest young scientific minds under the theme “Emerging Scientists Driving Change.”
Hosted at Mintek, the two-day event attracted students from universities across the country, along with exhibitors and industry experts, to collaborate, innovate and explore the frontiers of science and technology.
The Hackathon, which took place on 1 October, challenged student teams to develop practical solutions to real-world problems in science and technology. Participants demonstrated exceptional creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork, underscoring the potential of young scientists to address societal and industrial challenges through innovation.
The following day, the Symposium featured presentations from both students and industry leaders. A highlight of the event was the keynote address by Dr Mamoeletsi Mosia, Managing Director of NRF-SAASTA. Dr Mosia underscored the importance of collaboration across industries in driving innovation and tackling complex challenges. She further urged young scientists to make science more fashionable and accessible, encouraging them to become ambassadors for science and technology within their communities and online spaces.
The NRF-SAASTA exhibition stand also drew significant attention. Representatives engaged with attendees on the importance of professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP). The exhibition aimed to raise awareness about the registration process, highlight the benefits of professional recognition, and showcase the opportunities available to scientists and engineers seeking to advance their careers through these statutory bodies.
The Mintek-SCI Symposium and Hackathon once again reaffirmed the power of youth-driven innovation in shaping South Africa’s scientific and technological future.
