NRF-SAASTA Contributes to Advancing Science Education at DeSTE Connect 2025
29 September 2025
The University of South Africa (UNISA) hosted the second annual Department of Science and Technology Education (DeSTE) Connect Conference from 8 to 12 September 2025 at Badplaas Forever Resorts. The gathering brought together leading scientists, researchers, and academics from the African continent and abroad to explore emerging trends and innovations in science and technology education.
The conference serves as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, with a shared commitment to reshaping education systems in response to global challenges and opportunities in these rapidly evolving fields.
Representing the NRF-SAASTA was Mr James Tlhabane, Project Coordinator Science Education (NRF-SAASTA). Mr Tlhabane presented a research paper titled “Teachers’ Perceptions as Enablers to the Effective Use of Technology Tools in the Physical Science Classroom: A Case of Malamulele Central Circuit.”
His presentation highlighted the importance of using data-free technology tools to improve the teaching and learning of Physical Science in rural communities. He emphasised that education should continue seamlessly during crises such as pandemics, whether learners are at school or at home. His work offers practical solutions for supporting learners and teachers in under-resourced areas, particularly during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic.
Throughout the week, delegates engaged in robust discussions, sharing research insights that could benefit communities with limited educational resources. The conference concluded with a gala dinner and the awarding of certificates to participants.
Reflecting on the event, Mr Tlhabane described the experience as “an eye-opener” and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn and network with peers from across the world.
