Bringing Science to Life: NRF-SAASTA and Harmony Gold Empower Learners
27 May 2025
An engaging science outreach initiative has injected fresh energy into four high schools within the Lejweleputswa District, thanks to a partnership between NRF-SAASTA and Harmony Gold Mines.
In May, NRF-SAASTA and Harmony Gold Mines visited Taiwe Secondary School, Concordia Secondary School, Lebogang Secondary School, and Leseding Technical Secondary School. The schools have been adopted through a joint initiative aimed at promoting awareness and interest in Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) among learners, while encouraging greater enrolment in Mathematics, Science, and Technology (MST) subjects. The initiative also sought to inspire more learners to pursue careers in related fields.
As part of the program, Harmony Gold Mines provided some financial support, and NRF-SAASTA focused on science engagement activities and learner development. Each school saw the adoption of approximately 20 Grade 10 learners currently taking Mathematics and Physical Sciences. These learners received educational resource packs containing essential academic tools, including scientific calculators, mathematical sets, school bags, and other study materials.
In addition to direct learner support, NRF-SAASTA held strategic meetings with School Management Teams (SMTs), including principals and heads of Mathematics and Physical Science departments. These discussions centered on ongoing science engagement programs facilitated by NRF-SAASTA, highlighting opportunities for both learners and educators to benefit from national science initiatives.
Adding a spark of excitement to the visits was the participation of the ArcelorMittal Science Centre, which delivered interactive science demonstrations aimed at capturing the imaginations of Grade 9 and 10 learners. Many were left amazed as they watched seemingly magical phenomena demystified through scientific explanations.
A representative from Harmony Gold Mines joined the final leg of the school visits, witnessing firsthand the enthusiasm generated by the science outreach activities.
Through the joint initiatives of NRF-SAASTA and Harmony Gold Mines, this program represents a significant advancement in promoting science and technology in South Africa, paving the path for a new wave of scientists, engineers, and innovators to emerge from the Free State.
