Bridging Futures: Science and Role Modelling Experience for Schools
09 September 2025
Umlazi Comptech High School learners were given a glimpse into the world of science and higher education during the “Bridging Futures: Science and Role Modelling Experience for Schools” event, hosted as part of the 2025 NRF Next Generation and Emerging Researcher Symposium.
The programme kicked off with welcoming remarks from Dr. Mamoeletsi Mosia, Managing Director of NRF-SAASTA, who set the tone for an inspiring day of learning and motivation.
Accomplished guest speakers, including Prof. Lebo Gafane-Matemane and Dr. Lebogang Thobakgale, shared their personal journeys in science and offered practical advice to the pupils. Their messages highlighted the values of hard work, resilience, and academic focus, while also underscoring the funding opportunities available to high-performing students. Learners were urged to steer clear of negative influences and stay committed to their goals.
Adding to the excitement, exhibitors from Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) staged a live science show. The interactive demonstrations, featuring crowd pleasers such as elephant toothpaste and reversible reactions, captured the curiosity of Grade 8, 9, and 12 learners and showed science in action.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education’s Deputy Director General, Mr. Mazibuko, delivered the closing address. He reinforced the importance of education and warned learners about the dangers of poor choices, including teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, and negative peer pressure.
Learners also had the opportunity to engage with exhibitors from institutions such as the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Durban University of Technology (DUT), the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON), and MUT, gaining insights into potential study and career paths.
The “Bridging Futures” event lived up to its name by creating a bridge between school and higher education, leaving learners motivated to pursue careers in science and beyond.
