About the Workshop

The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) in partnership with the South African Agency for Science & Technology Advancement (SAASTA) invites Grade 10, 11 and 12 Geography Educators and organisations involved in environmental science education training to join us for a webinar that introduces you to SAEON’s free online learning programme on GIS that is aligned to the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS). The webinar Includes QGIS and Google Earth tutorials.

The e-learning programme introduces the concepts of GIS by using practical examples that make the content of GIS easily related to everyday activities. QGIS is free software that is available for you to download and use it. Easy to understand training videos were developed to illustrate how to use the QGIS software to implement the activities in the training manual. This webinar will enable you to gain a plethora of skills from this exciting QGIS e-learning platform through the use of the training videos to commence the activities in each section.

Once you have acquired these new skills in using QGIS, you could use them to teach GIS in your classroom as this is free software and it can be installed on your computer or computers in your lab. If you do not have access to computers, we have the uploaded PDF version of the GIS manual on the SAEON education website that has paper-based activities that you could adapt and use in your classroom.

SAEON is accredited by the South African Council of Educators as a training provider for educators.
