FameLab SA Winner 2024

NRF SAASTA are thrilled to announce that Yolanda Mbalenhle Mngcongo has been crowned the 2024 FameLab South Africa National Winner! She is involved in ground-breaking research on Indigenous Medicine which has not only captivated the judges but also showcased the rich heritage and potential of traditional medicine.

Through her research at Nelson Mandela University, she is involved in developing eco-friendly silver nanoparticle filters to enhance hospital air purification systems with the goal of reducing infections and improving patient care for the most vulnerable. The nanoparticles are rendered environmentally safe, through a special process combining silver and medicinal plants highlights the importance of indigenous knowledge systems and their relevance in today’s scientific landscape. By bridging the gap between traditional practices and modern research, she is paving the way for new insights and applications in health and wellness.

This achievement would not have been possible without the invaluable support of Jive Media Africa, whose commitment to promoting science communication and innovation has been instrumental in nurturing young scientists. Additionally, a heartfelt thank you all of the universities and partners for their dedication to amplifying the voices of emerging researchers.

Join us in celebrating Yolanda’s remarkable achievement and her contributions to the field of science. We look forward to seeing how her work will inspire future generations and contribute to the understanding of indigenous knowledge.

NRF SAASTA would also like to congratulate all of the FameLab South Africa National finalists for their incredible talks and effort. We especially congratulate the two runners-up, Siphosethu Mgwili from Walter Sisulu University, and Eduard Zehrt from Stellenbosch University.
