We are proud to announce and celebrate a significant academic milestone achieved by one of our own, Dr Moloko Matlala (Manager of Science Education at NRF-SAASTA), who has been awarded a PhD in Science, Engineering and Technology. Dr Matlala’s doctoral research focused on a crucial area: The transition of Electrical Engineering Technology students into the world of work.

His work explored the alignment between the skills acquired by graduates and those required by industry, a topic driven by his passion for addressing youth unemployment and poverty. His research contributes meaningfully to national conversations around employability, skills development, and workforce readiness.

Dr Matlala joined NRF-SAASTA in 2012 as the Manager of Science Education, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and experience. Prior to joining NRF-SAASTA, he served as a Chief Education Specialist at the Department of Education, where he led teams responsible for developing the Mathematics and Technology curricula for Grades 10-12.

Over the years, Dr Matlala has represented the education sector on numerous key platforms and task teams, including:

• The Ministerial Task Teams (MTTs) for Technology, Technical Mathematics, Technical Science and National Curriculum Vocational (NCV) for Grade 10-12.
• The DHET Education Information Standards Committee.
• The Engineering Council of South Africa’s Technology Programme Accreditation Committee.
• The QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations) Qualifications and Programmes Committee.

With academic qualifications that include a BSc in Mathematics and Physical Electronics, Honours and Master’s degree in Electronics, and now a PhD, Dr Matlala is a lifelong learner who models excellence. He is also a qualified artisan, with a deep commitment to youth empowerment and success.
