The benefits of
NRF-SAASTA’s Volunteer
Programme

  • By Staff Writer, SAASTA.

Annually NRF-SAASTA contracts 200 volunteers for a period of 12 months to be stationed at different science centers and science facilities. Since its inception in 2009, our volunteer programme has placed over 2000 volunteers across different facilities in all the nine provinces of South Africa. The purpose of our volunteer programme is to provide real-world experience that enables the young graduates to put everything they have learned into action.

“Busisiwe Ndlovu one of our volunteers at NRF-SAASTA had this to say about the volunteer programme, “The volunteer programme helped me gain skills that I will be able to apply to future jobs. It has really helped me apply what I have studied to a real-world setting. I was mentored by a seasoned professional during the duration of my volunteerism, you can see what the job is like and you can gain insight into what a career in that field entails.” Santswere, President of African Young Generation in Nuclear (AYGN).

“Because most employers want you to have some experience before they can hire you, our volunteer programme ensures that the young graduates gain needed experience. Through our volunteer programme, participants increase their knowledge and skills. Doing that will give them a greater confidence and a sense of accomplishment that future employers will be excited to see.
