Profile

Nonkululeko Magwaza is a young woman who was born and raised from humble beginnings. As a young girl she had a passion for talk shows.

She spent her early school years in Pietermaritzburg, coming from the rural Mpolweni Mission. After her high school years at Haythorne Secondary, and a teenage pregnancy, she was determined to push even further to improve her life and reach her goals.

She studied further toward her National Diploma in Journalism at Icesa City Campus, graduating at the top of her class in 2010. She was a tutor to first year students and was an editor of the campus newsletter.

Nonkululeko is now part of the Science and Technology Youth Journalism internship programme at the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement,  working as an intern at Umngungundlovu Community Radio station.

She is growing as an individual and is adapting to learning new things that she never thought would cross her path. Even though science was not her favourite subject at school and she had always had a preference for geography as a teen, she is now proud to say science has never sounded so much fun.

She hopes that through this journey she can take her knowledge back to her community to further show them that science happens all around them every day and celebrates amazing phenomena of life itself.
