The best of Science Lens on show in Italy

SAASTA was invited to exhibit winning entries from a competition dedicated to science photography at the biennial international Public Understanding of Science and Technology Conference that took place in Florence, Italy in April.

Celebrating the weird and the wonderful - the Southern African Science Lens competition photo exhibition at the PCST12 Conference in Florence, Italy.
One of the winning entries in this year's Southern African Science Lens competition.

Science Lens competition

SAASTA has been challenging photographers since 2002 to participate in the Southern African Science Lens competition, which aim is to illustrate the excitement and impact of science in a visual way and to communicate the science behind the images to a broad public. From the first round, photographers have responded enthusiastically to the challenge to illustrate the world where science meets art. Seven rounds of the competition have taken place to date.

The theme of the conference was Quality, honesty and beauty in science communication and the organisers felt that the Science Lens competition spoke to this theme. The invitation to exhibit 10 posters with photos and descriptions gave SAASTA the opportunity to show this project to an international audience of science communicators, journalists, science and society researchers and others involved in public engagement with science and technology. The delegates enjoyed viewing the posters during their tea and lunch breaks. SAASTA has received excellent feedback on the exhibition.

The conferences are organised by the International Network on Public Communication of Science and Technology (PCST), a network of individuals from around the world who are active in producing and studying PCST.

The next round of the SA Science Lens competition will take place in 2013, so keep your camera at the ready and watch out for the announcement of the competition on the SAASTA website.
