If your grandmother gets it, the press release is ok

Dr Benne Holwerda
Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Astronomy, University of Cape Town, South Africa

My Hubble monthly picture release did OK, but work on that started as soon as I had a half-decent draft of my scientific paper. The Hubble Heritage Project people politely but completely threw away my first draft of a press release. Iteration is key here. Get rid of "fancy" language an especially jargon. Acronyms are especially bad. As an astronomer there is a whole separate lingo. One way to remedy this is to have a decidedly non-scientist read through the whole thing. If your grandmother gets it, the press release is ok.
