Star on radio and TV

Be ready with an answer

Practice talking to a non scientific audience. Ring up your local astronomical society and tell them that you would like to come and speak to them. Any practice at public speaking is good practice. Rehearse a few deflection answers. If, for example, whilst live on TV, the presenter drops an unexpected question on you "How far away is Jupiter?" you must be ready with an answer that hides that fact that you don't know. "A long way away!" is not as good an answer as "It depends, sometimes when Jupiter is on the same side of the Sun as us it is really close, a small telescope will show it well, but sometimes it is very distant and you would need a larger piece of apparatus to see it".
