We've come a long way … Advice to young astronomers about outreach

Assistant Professor Marie Radbo
Vice Dean of Science, University of Gothenburg, Sweden

Speaking and writing about astronomy to the public may not bring money or promotion, but it brings huge personal rewards. I have also been able to bring new ideas and perspective back into my research based on what I've experienced in my popularisation work.

At least we've come a long way…Years ago many people in academic circles complained about the time I spent on popularising astronomy, now young people are encouraged to do it. Now they have given me credit for my communication work and made me Vice Dean of the science faculty. I hope I have broadened the path for those who will do this work in future. I will be very happy if astronomers in future will get professional credit for communicating their work.

I will retire in a few years from academic life, but will continue communicating astronomy for as long as people want to hear me!
