Christine Steenkamp
Christine Steenkamp

Christine Steenkamp is a lecturer in Physics at the University of Stellenbosch. She received a Women in Science Fellowship from the Department of Science and Technology in 2003 which allowed her to spend six months at a research institute in the USA as a post doctoral research associate.

Qualifications needed for her position
A PhD in physics

Who inspired her to study and work in physics?
Her father, a physicist, applied his physics knowledge to wood science for most of his career. From him she learned that the principles of physics are at work everywhere in real life.

What she does
Christine does research is in the field of laser physics. She works as part of a research team of staff and postgraduate students of the Laser Research Institute. They use lasers to investigate the properties of different materials - from single gas molecules to crystals and fruit skins. She also lectures students, which she finds both challenging and rewarding.

Why physics?
It is always looking for answers to the "how does it work" question in nature.

Career highlights
Working in the stimulating research environment in Colorado, USA was a wonderful learning experience.

Her goals for the future
She would like to apply lasers in interdisciplinary projects. She hopes to make their research group a happy and productive work environment for students from different backgrounds.

The future of physics in South Africa?
Physics and physicists will be contributing much to the scientific and technological development in South Africa in the next decade and thereafter. Complementary to basic research in physics, there will probably be a move towards interdisciplinary research where principles of physics are applied in completely different fields of investigation such as biology or electronics.

On stereotypes
Her counter measures against stereotyping in the work environment are to be sure of who she is and to live and work with integrity; to be confident about her abilities; and to always act in a professional way. "Although it may take time, my reputation may break down preconceptions not only towards me, but also towards those coming after me."

What about prospective female students in the field of Physics?
If in doubt: ASK! Whether in your studies and career - never be afraid to ask questions to lecturers, colleagues or conference speakers. Maintain a balanced lifestyle. Make sure that you have the support of a friend, a family member or a mentor with whom you can discuss your experience of your studies or career.
