National Science Olympiad
Youth Science Week

Traditionally, during the July vacation, a group of learners who excel or demonstrate potential in the Olympiad are invited to participate in a week-long science event.

Furthermore, a smaller group of learners demonstrating exceptional performance or potential are selected to attend the London International Youth Science Forum during July/August.
The local Youth Science Week programme for some 100 top performers in the Olympiad includes excursions, lectures and workshops, offering an additional enrichment experience. During 2008 the learners visited to Coca Cola, Sci Enza in Pretoria, Mintek, Johannesburg Planetarium, SAASTA’s Johannesburg Observatory, NECSA and Denel.

The final evening of Youth Science Week culminated in an awards ceremony on 03 July 2008 where over 30 prizes were awarded to schools and learners. The Minister of Science and Technology gave the keynote address.

Furthermore, camps are being held in Free State, Western Cape and Gauteng during September for learners from disadvantaged communities who showed potential during the 44th National Science Olympiad.
