The Primary Science Day initiative provides educators and learners in Grades 6 and 7 with resources to run a designated day with fun, interactive science content. The theme for Primary Science Day 2006 to 2008 is "Electricity".
In order to ensure that the activities for the day are implemented, SAASTA holds workshops with the targeted educators. The purpose of the workshops will also be to explain, interact with and distribute the educator science kits and materials for the day. Whilst educators will be furnished with a kit and resource material, learners will be supplied with a brief activity book comprising several activity worksheets and projects.
On the designated day, which takes place during school time, all these educators will "workshop" their learners utilising the provided materials.
This innovative approach has enabled SAASTA to bring the world of Science closer to the primary school community. The project scope addresses both the need for educator development and learner stimulation in the sciences. While providing educational content, it also aims to impart an appreciation and enjoyment of science.
