Journalists often get press releases before the scientists do. There have been many times that I've been contacted by a journalist wanting an interview about a press release they've just received. Unfortunately, sometimes I've not heard anything about it, because the news is not yet public. Just ask them for a copy of the release and a little time to review it before being interviewed.
