We are really counting the days to this historic conference and the opportunity to establish an African network to bring science closer to society and vice versa.

Of course, such an event comes with significant logistical detail and to those who will be joining us, we would like to highlight the following:

Please be sure to send your completed registration form to Taskeen Henry at Inkanyezi Event Organisers on fax +27 41 365-5715. There are very few places left and without a completed registration form, no place will be reserved. Register now!
  • The completed registration form is also crucial in terms of arranging airport transfers to your accommodation and between the hotels/guesthouses and the conference venue. Without that information, you may very well have an extended stay at the airport!
  • Remember to also fax proof of payment of the registration fee to Taskeen at Inkanyezi, clearly marked with your name and surname.
  • Please be reminded that you are personally responsible for adequate travel and medical insurance while in South Africa.
  • Delegates wishing to pay their conference fees on the opening day of the conference (4 December) will be required to pay in cash only, as there are no credit card facilities.
  • Finally, in terms of airport departure transfers – you will need to be ready at your hotel one-and-a-half hours before departure time. Social event transfers – all delegates to wait at hotel reception area at least half an hour before social starts.

We are really looking forward to meeting you in Port Elizabeth in less than three week’s time!

Building a case for African science communication

In building a case for science communication that responds to the needs of Africa; the conference will ask questions such as:

  • How do we highlight the value of Africa’s unique assets in science and technology?
  • How do we promote Indigenous Knowledge Systems as areas of research?
  • How do we integrate public engagement in research and science policy in Africa?
  • How do we build a case for science communication as an essential tool for African researchers and policy makers?
  • What are the most effective methods to achieve public engagement with science and technology?

Join us in answering these questions – and maybe a few of your own – in South Africa, December 2006!

The conference further aims to:

  • Bring together Science Communication role players and representatives from African countries and internationally to develop the field of Science Communication in Africa and forge/strengthen collaborative networks on the continent;
  • Showcase good practice and examples from Africa;
  • Establish Africa as an international role player in the field of Science Communication; and
  • Provide opportunities for skills transfer in the area of Science Communication.

Further information, including abstracts and registration details, are available from: www.saasta.ac.za/ascc.
