The winners of the South African leg of the Africa-Japan Speech & Essay Competition were: • Category 1: Zia Maharaj of Beaulieu College (Gauteng) • Category 2: Maphoto Jerida of Khaiso High (Limpopo) • Category 3: Jasmeer Ramlal of the University of Pretoria

The three runners up in each category were:

• Category 1: Ravishni Mahadeo, Fields College (North West)

• Category 2: Alexandra McIlraith, Roedean School (Gauteng)
