Kimberley Archaeology Tour

The Kimberley Archaeology Tour is an opportunity to discover a wealth of significant rock art and archaeological sites in the area and provides an introduction to the last 3 million years of Northern Cape history. It starts at the magnificent Ancestors Display in the McGregor Museum and then leads to unique Stone Age and rock engraving sites.

The rock art trail at Wildebeest Kuil runs through stark and beautiful country, just 15km from Kimberley. On piles of andesite rocks jumbled together just off the boardwalk are engravings made between 1 000 and 2 000 years ago - of elephant, antelope, rhino, wildebeest, many eland, dancing human figures, geometric designs. These engravings were chiselled with a hard pointed stone by artists of exceptional talent.

There are more than 150 rock engravings in the Wildebeest Kuil alone, all which have been excellently preserved by the dry bushveld air.
