The Cederberg Wilderness Area lies some 200 km north of Cape Town, stretching from the Middelberg Pass at Citrusdal to north of the Pakhuis Pass at Clanwilliam and encompassing some 71 000 ha of rugged, mountainous terrain.
San and Khoi people inhabited the Cederberg area from earliest times and today the area still holds a precious legacy of a bygone age. There are hundreds of rocky overhangs and caves where visitors can explore and find some of the best examples of San rock art. Some of these paintings are up to 6 000 years old and are very sensitive to damage. Vandals who damage or deface rock art face stiff penalties and even imprisonment.
For accommodation and other enquiries you can phone the Cape Nature Conservation office in the area on (022) 931-2088 or visit their web site at www.capenature.org.za.
