Where is it?
The National Museum can be found at 36 Aliwal Street, Bloemfontein; tel: (051) 447-9609. The Museum is open from Mondays to Fridays (08:00 - 17:00), Saturday (10:00 - 17:00) and Sundays and Public Holidays (12:00 - 17:30). It is closed on Good Friday and Christmas Day.
What can be seen?
The National Museum is a treasure house of unique and fascinating fossils and artefacts, that brings the story of man out of Africa to life. Fossils of ancient Karoo reptiles and mammal-like reptiles take the visitor some 240 million years back into the past. Some "African Origins" attractions at the Museum include:
- The world-famous Florisbad skull, estimated to be 250 000 years old
- The only complete skeleton of Euskelosaurus (one of the earliest known dinosaurs) in the world
