The Taung Heritage Site

Where is it?

The Taung Heritage Site is part of South Africa's Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site. It is located to the West of the Taung village, at the Buxton quarry. The nearby Blue Pools is a popular picnic site along a pristine spring winding through an ancient limestone valley.

How to get there

At the Taung crossroad, turn to the west for 4 km; then left to Pampierstad for 6,5 km; and right again for 3,8 km to the Buxton quarry. Indicator boards will lead you to the gates. For more information you can contact the Northwest Tourism and Parks Board on

Famous fossils

The Taung Heritage Site is dedicated to the discovery of the skull belonging to an early hominid, named Australopithecus africanus, meaning the "southern ape of Africa". It was discovered in 1924 and identified by anthropologist Raymond Dart.
