The Rock Art Research Institute

Where is it?

The Rock Art Research Institute is housed in the Department of Archaeology, Van Riet Lowe Building on the campus of the University of the Witwatersrand. The Institute can be visited by appointment, telephone: (011) 717-6056. In March 2006 a new rock art museum will open on the university campus.

What is on display?

Southern Africa has one of the longest and richest rock art traditions in the world, with more than 15 000 widely distributed, documented rock art sites.

The Rock Art Research Institute houses an impressive collection of San rock art copies. It seeks to interpret and develop understandings of Africa's rock arts in terms of authentic beliefs, customs, rituals and life-ways.

A Rock Art Information Pack, available from the Institute, has the following aims:

  • To provide information about the age, authorship and meaning of south African Rock Art.
  • To provide practical information on managing and conserving rock art.
  • To inform all about the legislation that protects this irreplaceable and important part of our cultural heritage and to explain how this legislation can be used to help all to protect South Africa's heritage.

A popular brochure in English and many of South Africa's indigenous languages is also available on request.
